POLICY OFFICER  

A policy officer is someone who is an excellent researcher, and offers advice and support to businesses, organisations and governments based on their analysis. Most of your work will be around collecting data and analysing it.  

As a policy officer, you’ll have a variety of areas to work in, so you can find yourself in either the public or private sector. A common route is working for local governments, where a degree in politics will certainly be useful. Here you’ll research and help create public policies that would have an impact on large groups of people.  

You could also choose to work with charities and companies and help them with building policies to support or promote their cause.  

The usual responsibilities a policy officer has are gathering data, analysing, understanding your client’s aim, liaising with colleagues, writing reports, offering advice to senior workers, and keeping up to date with economic and political developments regarding your work.

Entry Level  – $41,000

For a career in this pathway, you must have a bachelor’s degree in politics, economics, sociology, or another related subject. You may have to go through training as well, but this is typical for most jobs. What would definitely help at this stage is gaining work experience at different places, and using those skills to show off on your resume. 

 Experienced  – $71,000 

An experienced policy officer would have more years on the job to become accustomed to the role. Some positions would in this career path might require a masters degree to gain specialist knowledge that would give you an advantage over others. Even if it isn’t a requirement for your role, it may be worth considering doing one in the future.  

Senior  – $103,000 

To rise to senior positions as a policy officer, you’ll need to be persistent and be employed in this sector for a number of years. As you get promoted, you’ll be given the opportunity for higher salaries and more exciting challenges at work!
